Massapequa Public Schools Takes Action

District Vehicles Display MTAC Message

MPSDistrictVehicle_MTACMagnet_CompressedSince 1997, Massapequa Public Schools (MPS) has worked with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) to ensure Massapequas’ children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. In support of MTAC’s mission and campaign for the prevention of prescription drug misuse, all MPS district vehicles will display MTAC’s Car Magnet: Secure/Monitor/Dispose Your Prescription Drugs.

13480_MTA_Magnet_12x12_V2_CompressedMTAC’s Secure Monitor Dispose campaign reminds parents and residents of the essential steps in the prevention of prescription drug misuse as 71% of young adults in the Massapequas who misuse prescription drugs get them from the medicine cabinets of friends and family. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately three out of four new heroin users report having abused prescription opioids prior to using heroin.

Residents can also Take Action and SAVE THE DATE for MTAC’s next prescription drug take back day on Saturday, October 27th at Massapequa High School from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is part of the National Take Back Initiative which encourages parents and residents to clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in - safely and anonymously - prescription drugs and over the counter drugs. All drugs are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

If you are interested in being part of the solution and joining MTAC’s prevention efforts, contact Cathy Samuels, MTAC Coalition Coordinator, at (516) 799-3000 x131 or email info@mtacoalition.com. You can also visit the MTAC website or Facebook page to learn more about MTAC’s meetings and initiatives in the prevention of prescription drug misuse.
