Massapequa High Schools’ SADD Club Takes Action

MTAC Sponsors Youth Training & Outreach

Youth Sector Members from Massapequa Takes Action Coalition recently joined nearly 2,000 substance use prevention and treatment specialists from around the world for CADCA’s (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) 17th annual Mid-Year Training Institute in Orlando, Florida.

Samantha Sivert, 12th Grade President, Massapequa High School (MHS) Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club, and Angela Gallucci, Advisor, MHS SADD Club, attended the one-of-a-kind intensive training opportunity, geared towards helping coalitions find solutions to their community’s toughest substance use problems.

The MTAC representatives heard from several federal leaders, including Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Jim Carroll, and Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Frances Harding. They also participated in CADCA’s Youth Leadership sessions and training events to help them become strong community leaders and change agents.

Since 1997, the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) has been working to ensure Massapequa’s children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. MTAC parents, residents and sector members are currently visiting healthcare providers (doctors, dentists, etc.) to distribute MTAC’s Opioid Prescribing Toolkit and Questions to Ask When Prescribed Medication or Opioids wallet card for patients and caregivers.  If you are interested in being a part of the solution, contact Cathy Samuels, MTAC Coalition Coordinator, at (516) 799-3000 x131 or email info@mtacoalition.com. You can also visit the MTAC website or Facebook page to learn more about the prevention of prescription drug misuse.
